Where do you gather inspiration? Do you paint from photographs?
I never paint anything I haven’t experienced myself. My work is rooted in feelings, although I do take photos on my phone to refer back to. I often combine inspiration from several photos to create a new work.
How do you create texture in your pieces?
I create texture with oil paints. I occasionally incorporate sand to achieve a specific texture.
What size canvases do you use?
I like my viewers to feel and identify with an experience when viewing my work. I find large canvases allow the viewer to immerse themselves and “travel” into the work. The smallest size canvas I work with is 30” x 40” for an ocean piece and 40” x 40” for a forest piece.
How long does it take to create a painting?
In between applying the layers of oil paint, my work has to dry for several days. Often I work on four or five painting at the same time and rotate them in my studio. On average my work is in the studio for two to three months.
How long does your work take to dry?
Depending on how heavily the painting is textured, some pieces can take up to 6 to 8 months to dry completely. Even so, most of my paintings will be touch dry and ready for shipment within 4 to 6 weeks.
Where can your work be shipped?
I am able to help coordinate shipping worldwide. In fact, many of my paintings are part of art collections around the world, including but not limited to exhibits in the USA, China, England, Japan, Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland. Shipping charges and taxes are in addition to my art prices.
How can I prevent the work from collecting dust?
Once the paint has dried completely and is rock hard, a soft, clean brush can be used to remove any dust that may accumulate on the texture of the work.
Can I hang a painting in direct sunlight?
Yes. Oil paint is UV resistant and will not discolour in direct sunlight.
Is it possible for me to hang a painting above my fireplace?
Yes, being mindful of keeping a reasonable distance from the fireplace and any specifications for distance from combustible materials for the fireplace.
Can I commission you to paint a work with a specific size and subject?
With the skills developed during my early career in the commercial design world, you can expect that your commission project with me will be a collaborative experience where we create a painting that is representative of your vision. Commission projects have a 20% commission fee, 50% paid upfront and 50% upon delivery. For more information, please contact me.
Do you sell artwork prints?
No, as the textures of my work are such an intricate part of the experience for the viewer. All my works are original artworks.
Is there a secondary market for your art?
Yes. Over the past 20 years my art has on average appreciated in excess of 7% each year, and has been resold without my intervention in art galleries and auctions.
Do you have gallery or agent representation?
Yes! Currently I am proudly represented by Mountain Galleries, Whistler. www.mountaingalleries.com
